Elizabeth Miller was born April 4, 1808 in Coltran, Co., New York. Her father was Oliver Miller, born about 1774 of New York State and Vermillion Co., Illinois. Her mother was Sophronia [Cynthia] Nobles, born about 1778-80 of New York State and Vermillion Co., Illinois. On a family group sheet from the LDS Ancestral File, six children are listed in the Miller family.

On April 20, 1828, Elizabeth married a handsome, well-built man by the name of Lewis Neeley who also lived in Vermillion Co., Illinois. Before joining the Mormon Church, Elizabeth gave birth to six children. Alanson was born April 18, 1829, in Vermillion Co., Illinois, and died on November 12, 1832. Her next two children were born at Blue Mound, Dane, Wisconsin: William on August 29, 1830 and Armenius, who was born on April 30, 1832 and died a short time later. The family moved back to Illinois to Daneville, Vermillion County, where Elizabeth gave birth to three more children: Mary Jane, born October 8, 1833, Armenius Miller on January 1, 1836, and Lewis Arnold, born in 1838. Her family and her father’s family joined the Mormon Church about 1838 and traveled to Missouri with the missionaries. Both families suffered much persecution and her parents died there.

Elizabeth, with Lewis and their family, made their way to Nauvoo, Illinois, where the Saints had gathered after being forced to flee Missouri. She gave birth to two more children while there.
Harriet was born September 10, 1839, and Lewis was born in 1841. He was named for his older brother, Lewis Arnold, who died on November 6, 1840, a year before his birth. After reaching Nauvoo, the family settled in an area that was near Hillsboro, Montgomery Co., Illinois. While living here, two more children joined the family: John, born January 29, 1843 and Hyrum Smith, born May 7, 1844.

Before the Saints were forced to leave Nauvoo, Elizabeth and Lewis received their endowments in the Nauvoo Temple, on February 6, 1846, and their patriarchal blessings under the hands of Patriarch John Smith, an uncle of Joseph Smith, on January 10, 1846.

Elizabeth Miller Neeley died from exposure on February 2, 1847, at Winter Quarters, [Florence] Nebraska, eight days after giving birth to her eleventh child, Elizabeth Ann. On August 3, 1847, little Elizabeth Ann, age six months died of summer complaint. Two more of Elizabeth’s children died along the trek to Utah– four-year old Hyrum Smith died October 18, 1848, and five-year old John died December 7, 1848. Of the eleven children born to Elizabeth and Lewis, five of them lived to reach the Salt Lake Basin, where they married and raised large families of their own.

On the great monument sculptured by Avard Fairbanks, which stands guard over the pioneer cemetery at Florence, Nebraska, (Next to the Winter Quarters Temple) are the names of Elizabeth Miller Neeley, age 38, and her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Neeley, age six months.
