Windy was killed in the Battle of the Bulge. He was buried in the U.S. Military Cemetery at Margraten The Netherlands originally but later interred in his home town. He received the purple heart from his country for giving his all fighting the enemy. He is memorialized by two public markers. One is in front of the original Godwin High School, the other is on the memorial of Veteran's Park in downtown Grand Rapids.
