Mrs. Betty C. Payne, 90, of Charleston went home to be with the Lord at 7:15 am Sunday March 8, 2009.


Betty was a 1936 graduate of Poca High School and had worked for Martins Company during the Korean Conflict in Baltimore, MD. She was a member of Kelly's Creek Community Church, where she loved to work in vacation bible school as a hostess giving cookies to all the children.


Betty was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Molly Frazier Cook, her husband of 36 years William "Clair" Payne, her son James "Jim" Patrick Payne, her sister Thelma Cook Roush, and her brothers Lawrence "Cookie" Cook, Alva Cook, John Cook, and James Cook, Sr.


Betty is survived by her son Bill Payne of Charleston, her sisters Annie Workman of Charleston, Nellie Gritt of Buffalo, her daughter-in-law Patricia Payne of Columbus, OH, grandson Leroy Payne of Columbus, OH, granddaughter Sherry Payne Malone of Anchorage, AK, step-granddaughter Daphne Sagstetter of Columbus, OH and several nieces and nephews.


A celebration of Betty's life will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, March 11, 2009 in the chapel of Tyler Mountain Funeral Home and Memory Gardens with Pastor Cletus Price and Pastor David Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, 5233 Rocky Fork Road, Cross Lanes, WV 25313. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the caring staff of Cedar Ridge Nursing Center.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society.
