Lucy M. Whitney was born in Syracuse, N.Y., March 9, 1835, and departed this life January 21, 1935, aged 90 years, 10 months and 12 days. She was married to William H. Showers February 22, 1858. In 1869 they came to Adams county, Iowa, to make their home and have lived in the county the entire 57 years. Mrs. Showers has been a faithful member of the Seventh Day Adventist church for more than 50 years. Her husband passed away July 23, 1925. She was the mother of seven children, three of whom preceded her in death. The living children are Mrs. Etta Van Wagenen, of Prescott; Mrs. Claire Bridgeman, Creston; Mrs. Emma Chawgo, Phoenix, N.Y., William T. Showers, Des Moines. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 10 great, great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Sunday, at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Pastor George T. Smith, and interment was made in Evergreen cemetery.
Great-niece of Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin.
