Author. Her bestselling novel "The Women's Room" (1977) helped establish her as a leading figure of the feminist movement. Born Marilyn Edwards in New York City, she was educated at Hofstra College and Harvard University. She returned to Hofstra University and taught there from 1964 to 1968. She served as an Assistant Professor of English at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts from 1972 to 1976. "The Women's Room", which was derived from her own experience in an unhappy marriage, was made into a 1980 television-movie adaptation. Among her other works are "The Bleeding Heart" (1980), "Her Mother's Daughter" (1987) and "Our Father" (1995). She died from heart failure.
