A tombstone style marker was placed in Arrow Rock Cemetery as a cenotaph for Burton Lawless, one of his sons and two (twin) daughters. The Burton Lawless family cemetery is a little more than a mile south of Arrow Rock on the Cooper County side of the county line. The cemetery is in the southeast quarter of Section 36, Township 50 N, Range 19 W. Burton Lawless obtained a land patent for the parcel, the east half of the south half of Section 36, Township 50 N, Range 19 W, on November 15, 1823 as the first owner of the land out of the Louisiana Purchase. He obtained many more land patents in the area. He donated 25 of those patent acres for the Arrow Rock town site. The 1876 Saline County plat map and 1877 Cooper County plat map show his son D. Lawless as property owner of Burton's original purchase and location of the family cemetery in Blackwater Township, Cooper County.
