Bernard J. Adams Sr.
Bernard J. Adams Sr., 85, of Lower Burrell, died Wednesday, April 8, 2009, in Allegheny Medical Center, Natrona Heights. He was born July 6, 1923, in Penn Township, to the late William J. and Gertrude I. Anderson Adams Sr. and was a lifelong resident of the Valley area. He had resided in New Kensington and Brackenridge prior to Lower Burrell. A machinist, he worked for Union Spring and Manufacturing and Braeburn Alloy Steel Corp. and was an Army veteran of World War II. Bernard was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, New Kensington, where he was an usher and a member of the Holy Name Society. He was one of the most active members of the Knights of Columbus 1381 in New Kensington, where he was a past grand knight and held all of the chairs of the Third Degree. Bernie was the "go to" person of the council, organizing and assisting in organizing most all of their functions. He was also a member of the Color Corps of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly 928, where he was past faithful navigator and held all of the chairs of the Fourth Degree. He was a past president of the Greensburg chapter of the Knights of Columbus; a delegate to the state convention, the Western Pa. Caucus and was currently serving as a trustee. He was also a former district deputy for the Knights of Columbus. A volunteer fireman, he was a life member of the Pioneer Hose Company in Brackenridge and a life member of both the Brackenridge American Legion and Natrona Heights VFW. He enjoyed people and cards. Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Adams, of Butler; a son, Bernard J. "Butch" (Jenny) Adams, of Allegheny Township; and five grandchildren, Mindy Jackson, Matt Adams, and Joshua, Kate and Sarah DeGeorge. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy P. Dodson Adams; and two brothers, William Jr. and John Adams. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the RUSIEWICZ OF LOWER BURRELL FUNERAL HOME, Lower Burrell, where a funeral outside of Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Lower Burrell. The Brackenridge American Legion will hold services at 6:15 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home, followed by the VFW at 6:30 p.m. and the Pioneer Hose Co. at 7 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus Rosary service will be at 7:45 p.m. Friday.
