He was the son of Joseph Addleman and Sarah Pierce of Chester County, Pennsvylania. He was born in West Caln township, Chester County. He married Sarah Whitaker on November 24, 1813.

After the death of his grandfather, his father and uncle William and their families moved to Wayne County, Indiana. They migrated in stages during 1817 and 1828. In 1826, John, his brother Caleb, and sister Orpha came to Wayne county. In 1828, his father brought the remainder of the family.

John and Sarah had 14 children; the first 7 children were born in West Caln township, Pennsylvania, and the remaining 7 were born in Franklin township, Wayne County, Indiana. To support his family, John worked as a farmer for most of his life. In about 1829, he was elected to be Justice of the Peace and served in this office for 8 years. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He lived to be 82 years of age, preceding his wife in death by only two months. His wife died on April 13, 1873.
