Betty Danielsen Clawes 48, or Bessie as she was known, was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on 18 September 1878. When she was 21 years old she married on 27 June 1900 in Chicago to German born, 21 year old Richard August Clawes or Richard R O Clawes, (1879-1946). They were parents of three children; Roy Alexander Clawes (1900-1959), and Russell Clawes (1905-1961), and her first child Anna (1889-1899), who died as an infant. Betty was the daughter of Danish born Viggo A. Danielsen (1847-1903), and her mother Betty Danielsen (1848-1931), who was Swedish. Her mother's maiden name is currently unknown. The 1900 US Census shows that she, her mother, and brother Axel Danielsen (1877-1900), immigrated to the US in 1893. This was a year after her father Viggo in 1892. All came from Denmark. At the time of the Census (in 1900), Bessie was a "Dressmaker", her father Viggo a "Book Keeper" and he was also (I discovered later), "Supreme Secretary of the Danish Brotherhood in America". Her year older brother, Axel Danielsen was listed as a "Musician". He only lived until he was 23 years old, dieing from Consumption or what is now called "TB" on the 4th of July 1900 only a week after her wedding. Betty held offices in a womens organization called the "Eastern Star". She was concidered a "Great Club Woman", so it seemed she and her father were very active in the community. For a time she worked as a "Cigar Roller" or maker of cigars, also according to Ina, Jessie and Mary in family genealogy discussions.
She died on 4 December 1926 at the young age of 48 years from breast cancer. She would live to see one grandchild born earlier on 3 June 1926, who was hers and her mothers namesake, Betty Jean Clawes.
Bessie Danielsen Clawes is my G-Grandmother.
