Berthe Marie Nelson
born: 10 Feb 1860 Vestre Toten Parish, Nordforden, Christiana (Oslo) Norway
Died: 14 May 1917 Hill River township: Polk Co., Minnesota at Oscar & Clara Miller home of a heart condidtion - 57 yrs 3 mos 4 days
Bertha's maiden name was Nilsdatter (datter at the end of a name meant daughter just as a son would put son or sen after the father's first name such as Johnsen). In America, it then became Nilsen than to the English Nelson.
Her father was Nils Hansen Sandbakken. In America, he took the last name of Sandbakken. The common practice in Norway was for children to take their father's first name and add sen (Son in English) or datter to it. Thus, in Norway, all the Nils' children would have had the name of Nilsdatter or Nilsen.
Bertha Marie gave birth to Raymond when she was 44 years old. After his birth, Bertha's health deteriorated from a heart condition, so Clara cared for Raymond off and on for several years. In May 1917, four month's before Raymond's 13th birthday, Bertha died at Clara's home. Two years after Raymond was born, Clara married Oscar Miller.
