He joined the gold rush to California in 1849, but returned two years later to New Bedford, Massachusetts, to engage in the commission and shipping business, from which he retired in 1872. He was a Republican Congressman from Massachusetts for three terms, from 1889 to 1895. After being defeated for renomination in 1894, he retired to New Bedford. (bio by: Garver Graver)
