Emil Melvin Haugtvedt, a son of the late Syver and Gina Haugtvedt, was born Dec.26, 1890 near Barnesville, MN. At the age of seven years, he moved with his parents to a farm in Deer Township of Roseau County, near Greenbush. There he attended school and grew to manhood.

He was a veteran of World War I. Following his discharge from the US Army, in April of 1919, he returned to the Greenbush community. On June 21, he was married to Hilda Majer at the Poplar Grove Lutheran Church near Strathcona. The couple lived and farmed in Deer Township for many years. He also operated the road grader in Deer Township for many years. Following the death of his wife in 1962, Haugtvedt made his home with his son, Curtis, until two years ago, when he became a resident of the Greenbush Community Nursing Center.

He was a long-time member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church near his home and had served for a time on the church council. He was also a member of the Greenbush American Legion Post 88, and the Deer town board.

Funeral services were held Wednesday ath the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, near Greenbush, with Rev. Raynard Huglen officiating. Interment was in the East Bethlehem Cemetery. Military honors were by the Greenbush American Legion Post 88.

He is survived by four sons: Morris and Curtis Haugtvedt, both of Greenbush; Harris, Anoka; and Stanley, Warren; three daughters: Elaine (Mrs. Ernest) Nesteby, Greenbush; Velma (Mrs. Danferd) Hamness, Strathcona; and Eunice (Mrs. Basil) Staveness, Grygla; 21 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
