William Wilke was born in Germany 18 January 1866. He came to his death some time during the afternoon of 28 May at the age of 63 years, 4 months and 10 days. In November 1883, he came to the United States. For twenty years he made his home in Chicago. During that time on 6 June 1891, he was united in marriage with Marie Grage. Seven children were born to bless this union, one of whom died in infancy. Twenty-six years ago, in 1903, the family came to Iowa. For a time they made their home around New Liberty and Bennett. About fourteen years ago they came to Tipton and Cedar County which has been their home since.
Of the immediate family, besides the widow, six children mourn his sudden death. They are: Mrs. Joe Streit of Chicago, William of Sunbury, (IA), Mrs. Albert Chapman of Tipton, Fred of Sunbury, Rudolph of Chicago and Elmer at home. One sister Mrs. E. Callach and one brother Frank of Chicago and ten grandchildren also survive. Mr. Wilke was baptized a member of the Lutheran Church in Germany, and was a member of the Woodmen Lodge. He was a man beloved by his family as husband and father, and a good and honest citizen respected by all who knew him. Funeral services were conducted from the Lutheran Church Friday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. Frederick D. Boldt officiating and burial was in the Masonic Cemetery.
