Melvin A. Foss was born in Vermont to Nathaniel (a pioneer settler of Faribault County Minnesota) and Fanny Foss. He married Sarah Ann Nelson on October 9, 1863 in Mankato Minnesota and on December 15, 1863 enlisted in the 2nd Regiment, Minnesota Cavalry, Co H, which included two of his brothers-in-law; Albert and Alexander Nelson. He served under Major Henry Rose fighting the Sioux Indians in the Dakota Territory.

During his life he was a farmer in Verona Township of Faribault County, hotel proprietor in Lake Crystal Minnesota, and a home painter in Mankato.

He was said to have been well loved by his friends and family.
