On 13 July 1903, Charles and Frances Houston and their son Fred were in Springer, New Mexico traveling back to Kansas from Arizona when they had to leave the wagon train so that Stella could be born. They and the newborn, Stella, continued to Kansas with the next wagon train.

Stella was just an infant when her mother died and was raised by her father on farms and ranches near Dodge City, Kansas. At the age of 16, she married Neal Schoonover, and she divorced him shortly after their 2nd child, Chester, died of diabetes.

She was divorced and supporting three children during prohibition, so her options were limited. Stella began running liquor and supported herself and her babies by driving alcohol for several years. She was caught and served nine months in jail. After serving her time for "bootlegging," she was released. She moved herself and her three children to Idaho, where she struggled to make a living as a waitress. Not being satisfied with life in Idaho, she moved the family to New Mexico for a short time and moved on to Arizona.

In 1942 she met George Shepard. They fell in love, and after a few months, they married and made their home in California. She died of cancer on 13 Feb 1958 at the age of 54.
