Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient, US Congressman. Served in the Civil War as a Captain on Company G, 140th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and as a Major and Judge Advocate General on the staff of Major General Winfield S. Hancock. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia on May 6, 1864. His citation reads "Rallied and led into action a portion of the troops who had given away under the fierce assaults of the enemy". His Medal was awarded on August 31, 1893. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 9, 1865 for "conspicuous gallantry and meritorious services during the war". He was elected to represent Pennsylvania's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1879 until his death in office in 1912. Bingham County, Idaho is named for him.
