Lieutenant Commander L. Hancock, USN, was designated Naval Aviator #3175 (lighter-than-air) in 1924. Graduated U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1910. Awarded the Navy Cross during the World War as a member of the submarine service.
LT CDR Hancock, the executive officer, was killed in the destruction of the Navy dirigible USS SHENANDOAH (ZR-1) near Caldwell, Ohio.
The destroyer USS HANCOCK (DD-675) was named in his honor.
