Donna M. Scherr, 88, of 2357 Coventry Park, Dubuque, formerly of Essman Island, Guttenberg, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 27, at GracePoint Church, 3100 Windsor Ave. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St.

She was born on July 29, 1920, daughter of Ray and Lucy (Straub) Watters. She married Robert H. Scherr on Jan. 7, 1942, in Manchester, Iowa; he preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 2004.

Donna worked as a telephone operator at the former Dubuque Packing Co. during World War II, and later as a secretary at Dubuque Screw Products, Inc.

She was a lifetime member of GracePoint Church. Donna's great contentment and passion for life were the fruits of a deep belief in her faith. She led the servant's life daily.

Donna was a devoted wife of 62 years and a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She led a simple lifestyle, contented to be with her family and friends, both in Dubuque and Guttenberg. Husband, son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and cherished friends always came first. The grace and love she showed in making the ordinary become the extraordinary was her greatest gift.

Donna also had a flare for the dramatic. She loved to enjoy life. She chose to "dress for the occasion" and brought joy to everyone she met. She never lost track of her sense of humor nor her sense of decency. She was in every term of the word a lady. She will be missed by all, but will forever remain with them. She taught constantly but spoke only when she had to.

Surviving are a son, Michael R. (Gail) Scherr, of Peosta, Iowa; four grandchildren, Kelly L. (Brian) McClure, of Champaign, Ill., and their children, Tyler, Anna and Luke, Matthew R. (Ann) Scherr, and their children, Michael and Thomas, Daniel J. (Rebecca) Scherr, and their children, Vincent and Evelyn and William J. "Billy" Scherr, all of Dubuque; two brothers, William Watters, of Dubuque, and Paul (Barbara) Watters, of Michigan; and nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Lucy; and two sisters-in-law, Wilma Watters and Joann Watters.
