|Birth: ||May 29, 1916|
|Death: ||Apr. 13, 2009|
Jayne Bowerman Hall, widow of Ambassador William O. Hall, daughter of Oregon Gov. Jay Bowerman and Wayfe Hockett Bowerman, died in her apartment in Portland on April 13, 2009.
Jayne was born in 1916 in Portland. She graduated from Washington High School, attended Scripps College and transferred to the University of Oregon (B.A. Class of '37). She later worked for the Department of Agriculture in Minnesota where she met and soon married fellow U of O graduate Bill Hall of Prineville.
Bill's work first took them all over Oregon with the League of Oregon Cities, and then to Washington, D.C. while Bill was in the Navy, and Jayne worked for the War Department until the birth of their first child in 1942. After the war, Bill served in the Foreign Service of the State Department. They were stationed in Washington D.C. and overseas in Switzerland and U.S. Embassies in London, Karachi, Pakistan and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where Jayne volunteered with local and international organizations.
Whenever they were able to return home from overseas assignments, they returned to the Bowerman family ranch in Wallowa County, which she shared with her sister Sally Bowerman and Sally's daughters and grandsons. When Bill retired from the Foreign Service in 1975, they returned to Oregon where he taught at Lewis and Clark College until his death in 1977.
In memory of her husband and their time together in Ethiopia, Jayne donated some of their collection of Ethiopian art and artifacts to the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History, a project strongly supported by Jayne's half brother Bill Bowerman, renowned track coach at the university.
In summers, she expressed her interest in Oregon history by volunteering at the Wallowa County History Museum in Joseph with her sister Sally. She was also devoted to Fishtrap and was especially supportive in its early years. The many friendships and activities she enjoyed in the county were a joy to her in her later years. She also frequently participated in family reunions of the descendants of Oregon pioneer circuit rider Robert A. Booth and was often said to be the last living family member to have met him.
Jayne is survived by her three children, Sarah Sternglanz of Stony Brook, N.Y., William Hall of Portland, and Robert Hall of Enterprise and Imnaha; her daughter-in-law, Martha Keever Hall and son- in-law, Rolf Sternglanz; and her two grandsons, Robert Weylin Sternglanz of Davie, Fla. and Seth Sternglanz of San Francisco, Calif. as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, cousins and grand cousins scattered across the U.S.
The family requests that any remembrances benefit one of Jayne's recent volunteer activities:
The Friends of the Wallowa County Museum PO Box 430 Joseph, OR 97846; William O. Hall Scholarship Fund (International Affairs) Lewis & Clark College 0615 S.W. Palatine Hill Road, Portland, OR 97219; or the
Sally Bowerman Scholarship, Fishtrap, Inc. PO Box 38, Enterprise, OR 97828.
The family wishes to extend especially heartfelt gratitude to Jayne's doctor and assistant at OHSU and all the staff at Terwilliger Plaza's Terrace assisted living facility for their sincere and dedicated support during Jayne's last months.
The family plans a celebration of Jayne's life with family and friends for mid-summer at her beloved retreat, the ranch in Wallowa County.
