W. B. Elder Dies at 75, Burial Tuesday--Father of LaHarpe Man Accorded Honors of American Legion
The La Harpe American Legion post accorded full military honors at burial rites in Woodland cemetery near Baylis yesterday afternoon to William B. Elder, father of William V. "Bill" Elder of this city and Mrs. Ray Painter of Terre Haute.
Mr Elder passed away late Friday night, Feb 3, 1956 in the Veterans Hospital at Iowa City only two days after undergoing major surgery. He survived the operation in apparently good condition but later suffered a cerebral hemorrhage.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Woodland church,, three miles north of Baylis with interment in the nearby county cemetery.
Mr. Elder, a veteran of the first world War was quite well known here through rather frequent visits to the home of his sons and daughters.
A son of Dele Elder and Susan Kurfman Elder, he was born august 31 1880 near Baylis and was married Oct 1 1901 to Zora Ornduff. The family lived for many years in Macomb and during much of his adult life Mr. Elder taught school, practicing his profession both in Pike and McDonough counties, Illinois.
He was an avid sportsman also and a truly lover of the great out of doors.
Left to mourn his passing are the son William V. Elder of LaHarpe and six daughters, Mesdames Ruth Duke of Lima, Anne Finchum of Camp Pint, Irene Painter of Terre Haute, Carol Churchill of Colchester, Alberta Bushnell of Blandinsville and Enid Kilgore of Monmouth. There are 17 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Also surviving are two brothers, Jesse Elder of Timberlake, South Dakota and Amos Elder of Eldon, Missouri and one sister, Miss Edna Elder of Timberlake, South Dakota."
