Birth: Oct. 10, 1829
Death: Oct. 26, 1896

He was one of the largest and most successful farmer in the county, and was a man of great energy and fine business qualifications, honorable in all things and of sterling integrity. Captain Pitman was a gallant Confederate soldier, commanding Company G, of the 33rd Virginia Regiment, Stonewall Brigade. He was badly wounded at the battle of Kernstown, and fell into the hands of the enemy, but was soon exchanged and served to the end with conspicuous bravery. His first wife was a daughter of the late William Ripley, of Red Banks, one of the largest land owners of the county. After her death he married the widow of Valentine Ripley. He had no children of his own, but was all the father would be to the children of his second wife. Hon. Robert J. Walker, who married one of his step daughters, was with him when he died, and accompanied his remains to his home. He died of consumption in Washington, D.C. where he had gone for treatment. The news of his death though not entirely unexpected, will be a shock to his many friends, and will cause widespread regret and sorrow.
