Born Boonsong Mansri in Phetchabun, Thailand, he became world champion in only his third professional fight when he defeated Spain's Perico Fernandez in 1975. He would relinquish the title to Miguel Velasquez in June 1976 only to recapture it in their rematch four months later. Muangsurin would successfully defend his title seven times before he was defeated by Korea's Sang Hyun Kim in December 1978. His last notable bout was a 3 round knockout loss to Thomas Hearns in 1979. He retired from boxing in 1981 after compiling a record of 14 wins (11 knockouts) and 6 losses in 20 fights. He died from an intestinal ailment.
