Mr. Charles E. Nye, 91, of La Porte, Indiana, died Saturday April 18, 2009 at La Porte Hospital in La Porte, IN.

He was born January 15, 1918 in DesMoines, Iowa, the son of Charles Cummins Nye and Ethel (Eckert) Nye, living in LaPorte, IN. since 1961, coming from Valparaiso, IN.

Charles attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa and is a life member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, He was a Veteran of the US Army, serving four years, attaining the rank of Captain during WW II, in the Pacific Threatre. He worked for the Iowa Rating Bureau, Great American Insurance Co. and joined Hargrave Hargrave & Boston in 1961 and became a member of the corporation in 1965, until semi-retirement in 1983. Charles worked part-time for Hargrave, Boston and Taylor, Inc. until retirement in 1985. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of LaPorte, LaPorte United Fund, LaPorte Chamber of Commerce, on the Board of Directors for Community and LaPorte Hospitals for sixteen years, a past president of LaPorte Rotary Club, Excelsior Lodge AF & AM #41, Scottish Rite of South Bend, IN., Orak Temple Shrine, Royal Order of Jesters, American Legion Post #83, VFW, Elk's #432 and BPOE #396 of LaPorte and Iowa State Alumni Assoc. Charles was an avid golfer and was a charter member of the Over 40's Dance Club.

On June 2, 1946 he married Marian Skepper who preceded him in death on March 23, 2003. He married Vivian Brettin on November 29, 2003, who survives.

He is survived by his sons Charles W. (Jan) Nye of Russellville, KY. and Steven C. (Jo Ellen) Nye of LaPorte, IN.; daughters, Sandy (Dale) Cardwell of Shell Lake, WI. and Connie (Steve) Thate of LaPorte, IN; eight grandchildren, Gayle R. Nye, Jacinda Cherry, Kristine Toone, Anna DeLaRosby, Katherine Cardwell, Nikki Davis, Natalie Sularski and Kelly Thate; eleven great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia J. Brockett of Muskego, WI; several nieces & nephews.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Marian Collette (Skepper) Nye, and one brother, Richard V. Nye.

Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, Ind. where the family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm and from 9:00 am, Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church, until time of service. Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church at 10:00 am, Wednesday, April 22, 2009, with Rev. Evan Lash, officiating. Entombment will follow in the Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City, Indiana.

Memorial contributions may be made to the: First United Methodist Church of LaPorte or the First United Methodist Church choir 1225 Michigan Ave., LaPorte, IN. 46350 or Orak Shriners 3848 N. Frontage Rd. Michigan City, IN. 46360.
