2Lt John A Matheson was the pilot of 'Minnie the Moocher' which was a B-17G,tail# 42-97893 PU-M. He and his crew were attached to the 360BS 303BG 8th Air Force stationed at Molesworth England(USAAF station 107). The Matheson crew flew three successful missions. Mission#248 on 28 Sep 1944 was the fatal flight over Magdeburg, Germany (MACR 9413) where his A/C was shot down by 20mm cannon fire while flying the 'tail end charlie" in the formation. The crash site was at Schladen, near Hornburg (South Brunswick)Germany. John and three other crewman were killed the other five crewmembers were blown out and bailed out of the aircraft and survived the parachute jump and were taken as POWs. John was temporarily interred in the Schladen Cemetery, transferred to the National Cemetery in the Netherlands and later transferred to the GGNC in San Bruno.
As of 2012, there are no living members of his air crew.
