HUTCHINSON -- J.F. "Fred" Birdwell, 81, Hutchinson, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at a Wichita hospital.
Mr. Birdwell retired from the Santa Fe Railway in Topeka in 1977 after 35 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was born July 25, 1917, at Odell, Ark., the son of Abe and Zada Dobbs Birdwell. He moved to Hutchinson from Topeka in 1977. Mr. Birdwell was a member of Union Valley Bible Church in Hutchinson and the Boilermakers and Blacksmiths Union.
He was married to Vivian Irene Morton on Oct. 6, 1939, at Stillwell, Okla. She survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Joe L. Birdwell, Hutchinson, John E. Birdwell, Springfield, Mo., and Terry L. Birdwell, Dallas; two brothers, Mitchell Birdwell, Grandview, Wash., and Arthur Birdwell, Onalaska, Wash.; two sisters, Oda Irvin, Bristow, Okla., and Maude Lesslie, Salkum, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren.
Mr. Birdwell was preceded in death by a daughter, Freida Mae Wiley, and a granddaughter, Shalane Birdwell.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Johnson and Sons Memorial Chapel in Hutchinson.
Burial with military graveside honors conducted by a Fort Riley Honor Guard will be at Fairlawn Burial Park in Hutchinson.
Mr. Birdwell will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association and sent in care of the funeral chapel.
