My mother was very much a child of the depression, and it effected her life deeply. She had to rely on wits to survive - her parents were always working to make ends meet, and provided well for her, but they never fully acclimated into American culture. My mother married later in life, and I am her only child -- a bit of a lonely childhood, but it turned out well.... She denied herself many pleasures because she felt that life was uncertain, as it is, but I have taken almost the opposite approach. Life's lessons are learned hard....

She enjoy Bayonne, very much -- walking to the stores.(She had no need to drive and never learned how). She enjoyed her neighborhood friends - Irene Kokola, and planning trips with the local senoir cititzen groups. Playing cards was a favorite pastime. Moving to NY after her husband died was difficult, and very lonely for her.
