By all accounts, Sarah was the wife of Robert Smith. So far as is known, their children were Elizabeth, Sarah, Alexander and Nancy. Sarah's parents names are given as John and Mary Clemmons in the book "The Kith and Kin of Capt. James Leeper and Susan Drake His Wife" (Nell McNish Gambill - pub. 1946). This Leeper genealogy is also the source of the names of Sarah and Robert's children as given above.
In the 1780's and 90's, Robert Smith is said to have received several land grants giving him a considerable amount of land in what is now the middle Tennessee area. (I have not researched these grants.) By 1791 (the year his daughter, Nancy, married Richard Hightower in Davidson County), Robert and his family had settled in the area.
Although Robert and Sarah probably had other children, of those that are known; Elizabeth married John Criddle, Sarah married Alexander Ewing, Nancy married Richard Hightower and Alexander married Sarah Leeper (the daughter and only child of Capt. James Leeper and Susan Drake - in 1780 at Fort Nashborough, the first couple married in what is now Davidson County TN).
Sarah's birth and death dates are given on this memorial as they are found in the Leeper genealogy and a cemetery transcription by Sue Owen, Frank R. Owen and Mrs. Joe Bowman given in the book "Directory - Williamson County TN - Burials - Vol 1" (pub. 1973). The dates appear to have come from a stone that is no longer standing in the Hightower Cemetery. In the Leeper genealogy, Mrs. Gambill wrote, "Her resting-place is in the Hightower cemetery.......and her stone is the oldest there."
