Enlisted on 5/15/1861 as a Private.
On 5/15/1861 he mustered into "I" Co. IN 12th Infantry
He was Mustered Out on 5/19/1862 at Washington, DC
On 7/22/1862 he mustered into "A" Co. IN 75th Infantry
He was Mustered Out on 6/8/1865 at Washington, DC

Son of Alexander and Elizabeth (Rummond) Swaney. His mother died when he was about 12 years old. At about the age of 12 he came to the home of Job Ridgeway near New Holland looking for work. Mr. Ridgeway put him to work shucking corn. He was still at this home when the Civil War broke out and he enlisted as shown above. He served heroically until the end of the war, was with General Sherman on his historic march to the sea, and was in the grand parade in Washington, D.C.

After the war he returned to Indiana going to the home of Almon Jones in Huntington County. It was there he met and married Mary Weller on 9/4/1873. She died on 12/26/1875.
He married Martha E.(Kendall) Gray on 2/20/1879 in Wabash County.

He united with the Methodist Episcopal Church on 1/2/1869.
