SHOT BY JEALOUS HUSBAND Band Manager Meets Death at Pleasure Resort at Hands of Man Who Claims He Had Been Wronged.
Edward L. Hanks, manager of the Don Philippini band, was shot to death at the entrance to the dancing pavilion at Glenwood park Saturday night by Henry Southworth of Farmington who accused Hanks of stealing his wife and breaking up his home.
Hanks had just descended from the dancing pavilion with Mrs. Southworth on his arm and was in the act of offering her a drink from a nearby fountain, when Southworth stepped up from behind and fired point blank into the man's back, saying "That's the last drink you will give my wife."
Hanks staggered and fell on his face. A second later he squirmed to his knees and attempted to rise, begging for mercy from his assailant, who in rapid succession fired five times, each bullet taking deadly effect. Hanks struggled to his feet, clutched at his throat and fell dead at the feet of Mrs. Southworth, his blood spattering her white frock.

Hanks Had Deceived a Girl
... Learning of the residence of Mrs Hanks, Sheriff Harrison has wired her of the killing of her husband and asking her desires in the disposition of the body. An answer may be received from her today.
A telegram from Tillson, the lawyer of Chicago, dated August 15, 1911, further confirms the fact that Hanks was not divorced. It read as follows.
Hanks has no relatives here. His wife lives at Ridgefield Park, New Jersey.
--- Hanks Deserted Wife.
A dispatch, which may have an important bearing on the Southworth case, came from Jersey City, and is as follows:
Jersey, City, Aug.
For the first time in four years Mrs E L Hanks of Ridgefield Park heard of her husband today, and then she was told by wire that he had been murdered Saturday at Ogden, Utah. Hanks had trouble with his wife over another woman and left his home, wife and two sons, Edmund and John.
Only last week a mortgage on his home was foreclosed because of the inability of his wife to keep up on the interest.
The news of her husband's death was conveyed to Mrs Hanks today by a telegram from Hubert De Ballie of this city, who received a wire from Sheriff E E Harrison of Ogden, Utah. Mrs Hanks was prostrated by the news and a physician is now in attendance.

No Advices From Hanks' Relatives
... Letters and telegrams relative to the matter passed between Mrs Hanks and the local authorities, but apparently the widow was unable to raise the funds necessary to insure the shipment of the body to New Jersey.
The telegram which was sent Saturday evening conveyed the information that if the money necessary to send to body back east was not forthcoming by last evening the remains would be interred in the local cemetery, and no response to the message resulted in the announcement of the funeral.
