Walter Josephus Shackelford was named for his mother's (Jennie Spring (Edwards) Shackelford's) brother (Walter Josephus Edwards) who died as an infant and also "Josephus" for his maternal grandfather (Josephus Berry Edwards). The Atlanta, GA Directories (1889-90) show Walter as a Boarder at 198 Whitehall in 1889. Later he and his wife Alice (Randolph) Shackelford resided on Hanover Square in Brunswick, GA directly across from the Confederate Monument (his father Henry Patrick Shackelford was a Confederate Veteran). The 1903 Brunswick City Directory shows that he was employed by the Southern Railway.
