He grew up in the Hampton Roads area and attended Newport News High School where he played basketball for the Typhoons and graduated in 1939.
He enlisted in the Navy Reserve before graduating from high school and was called to active duty in the days prior to World War II. He trained as a Gunners Mate and served as a member of the Armed Guard in the early days of the war before being assigned to the USS De Haven (DD-727) in early 1944. He participated in the Invasion of Leyte and took part in the battles for Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He left the Navy in 1947 as a Gunners Mate First Class.
Edward Harrell married Thalia Priscilla Higgins on 12 Apr 1946 in Auburndale, MA. Together they raised three children: Deborah Anne, Mark Edward and Wayne Loring.
He worked for the W. P. Fuller Paint Company in Utah before moving to their San Francisco facility as a Glass Manager. The Harrell's settled in San Bruno, CA.
Edward Jones Harrell, Jr., died on 25 Feb 1961 as a result of a traffic accident near San Rafael, Marin County, CA when his car struck a fence. Although severely injured, he managed to retain control of the automobile and saved the lives of his two passengers. He was buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery on 01 Mar 1961.
