Jason was the son of David Calhoun and Martha "Patsy" Brooks Cuthbertson who are buried near him. At the age of 26, he took part in the the Indian Removal of 1838, serving with Co E. He first married Mary Rowan from Yancey County, NC after she moved to Cades Cove, TN. (Mary's father George Rowan had moved there in the late 1830's and established a mill). Their marriage took place on Feb 10, 1840. They moved to the Proctor area across the mountain in Swain County, NC, then eventually back to the Chilhowee area of Blount County, TN.

Jason bought and sold a lot of property over the years, so he was a man of means, as was his father.
