During his Major League career (1903 to 1916) he played third base for the Chicago Cubs, New York Highlanders, Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox. In eight consecutive seasons he stole 20 or more bases and he had a total of 248 career stolen bases; including stealing home eleven times. After his ball playing career, he was an American League umpire from 1917 to 1940 except for the years of 1927 to 1928 when he was the manager of the Detroit Tigers. During his time as an American League umpire he officiated in the 1921, 1925, 1930, 1933 and 1935 World Series. He was also the grandfather of actor Michael Moriarty, whose roles have included playing pitcher Henry Wiggen in the 1973 baseball movie "Bang the Drum Slowly". (bio by: DXA)
