Bert Amos, a long-time resident, businessman and community leader in Sargent, Nebraska, passed away June 23, 1965 at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 7 days. Bert, one of the eight children of Alfred and Carrie Amos, was born October 15, 1893 on the family homestead the miles south of Sargent. He grew to manhood on the farm and attended the Dry Valley School.
In 1917 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served until early 1919. He and hazel D. Thompson were married January 5, 1918. After WWI he and Hazel returned to the Dry Valley -Coburg area and engaged in faming until 1924, when they moved to Sargent and began operating the Sargent Café. In the ensuing 61 years of residence in Sargent, in addition to operating the Café for about 10 years and the Sargent Hotel for five years, Bert served as Postmaster from 1934 to 1963 and was Mayor of Sargent form 1964 to the spring of 1973. In later years he operated the small Amos Trailer court. Bert was very active in the community having served on several boards and in many organizations including 20 years on the Sargent School Board, 14 years on the Sargent Hospital Board and was among the businessmen who organized the Sargent Chamber of Commerce. The Sargent Nursing Home was built during his tenure as Mayor. He was an ardent booster of Sargent High School Athletics and community youth Baseball teams and was a life member of the Community Fair Board.
Bert had been a member of the Sargent American Legion Post No. 104 since 1924 serving in many capacities including Post Commander. He had been a County Veterans Service Officer since 1947. Prior to that he had been a long-time member of the Old Soldiers and Sailors Relief Commission. He was a long-time member of the Sargent Methodist Church.
Bert is survived by his wife Hazel of 67 years, one sister, Caroline Lenstrom of Sargent, two sons, Robert Farris of Paradise Valley, Arizona and Lynn Royce of Kearney. One a daughter, Donita Hastings predeceased him 1968. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and one Great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held June 25 at Rhoad's Chapel with Rev. David Hansen officiating. Internment was made at the Sargent Mount Hope Cemetery. Music for the services were provided by Bernard Bruce, soloist accompanied by Linda Spencer, organist Pallbearers were Don Mason, LeRoy Matousek, Al Brass, Jack Brass, Reed Pulliam and Robert Perrin.
