Civil War Union Army Soldier. He enlisted at the age of 19 on August 14, 1862 in the 79th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered in as a Private in Company H on August 23, 1862. He was promoted to Corporal on March 9, 1863, and to Quartermaster Sergeant on February 10, 1865. He served during the summer 1865 battles for Atlanta, Georgia, and in General William T. Sherman's "March to the Sea". He was honorably mustered on June 9, 1865 at Washington, DC.

After the war he graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1868, settled in Mount Holly, New Jersey, passed the New Jersey bar in 1871, and gained prominence for his over 40 years as an attorney.
