A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of thirty-four in Lancaster February 25, 1864, and mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. K, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. On April 16, 1864, he was temporarily detached to the 78th Pennsylvania Infantry as were others from the 79th but returned to the regiment by September 21 following. He was then hospitalized at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, and was absent on a furlough at muster-out. Because of that, on July 21, 1865, he was discharged by special order (says the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file; by general order claims Bates History of Pennsylvania Volunteers) to date July 12, 1865, the same day as the rest of his company.
