George Nelson Holmes died Nov. 4, 1936...a life long member of the Orange Order ... born in Picton, Ont. 1850 ... resided in Vennacher, Ont. before moving to North Bay ... funeral was held at his daughters home (Mrs. John A. Carmichael) Rev. M.N. Omand conducted services ... buried in Widdifield Cemetery ... George moved from Vennachar in about 1885 due to lack of industry there. The family moved to North Bay where George worked as a carpenter and logger. He homesteaded Lot 14, Con 5, Widdifield Township. When Elizabeth died George bought one acre across the road from his homestead to start a cemetery where he could bury his wife. This cemetery, according to records, is called Widdifield Cemetery.

NOTE: In 1994 David and Rosa Holmes had the name of the Widdifield Cem. legally
changed to the G.N. Holmes Community Cemetery. The first burial in it under the new name Occured on May 9, 1994 and is mentioned in "The North Bay Nugget," Monday, May 9, 1994, p.A-10, col.6, the burial of Bailey, Willis Ray.
