In August 1862, he enlisted with Company G, 114th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, promoted to 1st Lieutenant, and served until 1864 when he was discharged because of a disability.
He was the son of Daniel HUFFORD and Nancy WELTY, and the brother of Catharine, Elizabeth, Sarah, Lydia, Solomon, Susan, Nancy, Daniel, Abraham, and Rebecca.
John first married Elizabeth Ann BEERY (daughter of Peter). With Elizabeth, he was the father of Margaret and Emanuel. Elizabeth died in 1856, leaving John with two children under three years old.
In 1866, John married Mary Elizabeth CROOKS, the young widow of Daniel KISHLER. With Mary Elizabeth, John was the father of Dora and Nellie.
John, his wife Mary, and their two daughters are pictured on page 141 of the 1909 HUFFORD FAMILY HISTORY.
