Harriet Cain was the oldest of six children born to Hannah (Stoop) and Thomas Cain. Her father was a private in the K 99 PA Infantry in the Civil War and died on July 2, 1863 at Gettsburg. He is buried in Gettysburg National Military Park. Harriet was only 15 years old at the time.
