Harry Charles Drayton 1898-1971

Harry Charles Drayton (aka Henry C. Barrow) was born September 14, 1898 at his parent's home at 459 Prospect Ave., Brooklyn, Kings county, New York to Henry Childress Barrow and Alameda "Meda" (Hargrove) Barrow.

Harry's childhood is unclear. Family stories state various different versions of how and where he grew up. One story states that his parents weren't married due to religious beliefs, another story states that his mother died and he was raised by an aunt and Harry took the name of her husband. Yet another story states he ran away from home and made up the name Harry Charles Drayton.

He attended Victoria High School in Victoria, Ontonagon county, Mississippi in 1916.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on January 22, 1919 at the U.S. Navy Station in Nashville, Davidson county, Tennessee. Between 1919-1937 he served on the following Naval vessels; USS Florida, USS Galveston, USS Brazos, RSS Richmond, USS Elliott.

He meet Bertha Maria Kuest in the spring of 1937 in San Diego, California and they were married on August 22, 1937. She was the daughter of Fredrick Gottfried Kuest and Mary (Beglau) Kuest.

They became the parents to three children; a daughter, Helen June (Drayton) Ramirez and twin boys, Leonard Harry Drayton and Lawrence Harry Drayton.

The family moved from San Diego to Burlingame, California. Here Harry and Bertha divorced in 1948.

After his divorce, Harry continued to serve in the U.S. Navy and while serving in the South Pacific as a diver, his ship was boomed and he received injuries to his stomach and face and received a medical discharge. Upon his discharge, he returned to San Mateo, California.

Harry married Yvonne Valerie (Doiron) Hurley in 1951. She was the daughter of Ovide Jean Doiron and Emilie M. (Bouchard) Doiron and the widow of Raymond Joseph Hurley.

After retiring from the Navy, he was employed by Burlingame water department.

Harry passed away April 12, 1971 in San Mateo, San Mateo county, California and was laid to rest on April 19, 1971 in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, San Mateo county, California.
