Memorial services for Dr. Clyde D. Goodnight, 78, of Little River-Academy were held at 2:00 PM Dec 30, 2002 at the Little River United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ron Bellomy officating. Graveside committal service was in the Holland Cemetery at 11:00 AM.

He died Saturday, Dec 28, 2002 at his home. Dr. Goodnight was born March 3, 1924 in Holland, Texas to Owen and Lillian Duck Goodnight. He graduated from Holland High in 1941. He attended the University of Tulsa on a football scholarship, graduating in 1946. Dr. Goodnight graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School at Memphis in 1956 with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He was a family practice physician in Holland and Little River-Academy for 30 years.

During his educational years, he played professional football for six years, drafted by the Green Bay Packers and later playing for the Washington Redskins, attending medical school in the off-season. Dr. Goodnight interned at Kings Daughters Hospital in Temple, was a member of Little River Methodist Church, a member of the Lions Club, served on the Board of the Bell County MHMR, was on the board of directors of the Temple Symphony Orchestra, was a member of American Medicus, Texas Medical Association, American Medical Association and the NFL Retired Players Association. He was one of the founders of the Tablerock Festival at Salado.


He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. Survivors include his wife Virginia Fulcher Goodnight of Little River-Academy; one daughter, Eva Sheryl Goodnight of Little River; two sisters, Virginia Ragsdale of Belton and Mrs Hubert (Betty) Nutt of Valley Mills; and two brothers, Edward Goodnight of Bartlett and Wayne Goodnight of Holland. Goodnight Funeral Home of Bartlett was in charge.
