Saturday, September 24th, 1927 – Tuesday, June 9th, 2020

Dora Mercedes Appling, age 92, passed away June 9, 2020.

Visitation will be held at O'Bannon Funeral Home on Friday, June 19 from 9-1030 am. A Rosary followed by Mass will be held at St. John's Catholic Church at 11:00 am. Burial will be at the Appling Cemetery in Kingsbury, TX.

Mercedes was born in San Antonio, TX to Anastacio and Clemencia Gutiérrez. She was the youngest of 7 children. She was 2 months old when her father died. After his death, her mother moved them to Luling, TX to live on her grandfather's ranch.

She was a graduate of Luling High School. She worked as a sales clerk in a local store. She then moved to Austin, TX and found a job in ladies wear where she learned the business quickly. She was promoted to a store manager and helped open and manage the Bird Cage. She traveled to Dallas and New York City as an assistant buyer. She wanted the latest styles for her clientele in the State Capitol. She also cared for her mother who lived with her.

Mercedes left Austin, and married the love of her life, A.J. Appling in 1980. They lived in Kingsbury where she embraced country living. They loved Country and Western dancing and traveling in their Merry Miler.

She actively participated in St. John's Catholic Church as a lector, religious education teacher and served on the executive board. She also participated in the choir and Guadalupe Society.

She was a member of the Luling American Legion Auxiliary and loved being in a sewing and quilting circle. She also was a Pink Lady or Luling Hospital volunteer.

Mercedes is preceded in death by her husband, A.J. Appling; parents, Anastacio & Clemencia Gutiérrez, brothers, Alfred Gutiérrez Sr., Gilbert Anastacio Gutiérrez; sisters, Lupe Contreras, Stella Trevino, and Helen Jones.

She is survived by her sister, Criselda Leveritt and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Tyler Huerta, Chad Leveritt, Michael Lewis, Alfred Gutierrez III, Alfred Gutierrez IV, and Augustus Gutiérrez.

Honorary pallbearers are the Guadalupe Society of St. John's Catholic Church and the Pink Ladies of the Luling Hospital.

The family of Norma Cortez wish to extend our sincere thanks to the St. Helen Catholic Church in Georgetown, TX. The Extraordinary Ministers of Communion and the Legion of Mary provided prayers and church services. The family also wishes to thank the Brookdale Hospice who provided care and loving support. We are very appreciative of the attentive care of the Wesleyan Assisted Living/Memory Care.

Cris Leveritt, her 97 year old sister, reminded Mercedes of their fun times together. They also sang and remembered the words to many songs. Teresa Lewis, Claire Huerta, and Mona Appling were always there whenever needed.
