CENTER - Gayle Affolter, 56, Center, died Feb. 12, 2006, at her home, after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Center, with the Rev. Marvin Mutzenburger officiating. Burial will be in the spring in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.

Gayle Yvonne Redka was born Dec. 9, 1949, at Crosby, the eldest of three daughters born to Kenneth and Ethel (Roness) Redka. Raised and educated in the area, she graduated from Columbus High School. Shortly thereafter, her parents moved to Hazen, where Gayle met Earl Affolter. They were married Feb. 20, 1971. They had a daughter, Rebecca Gayle, born in Florida on April 18, 1973. They moved to Aberdeen, S.D., in 1973 and, after several years, moved back to North Dakota and settled in Stanton. They had a son, Charles Earl, born Sept. 1, 1978, and moved to Center in 1992.
Gayle's greatest love, after her family, was singing. She was a member of a group called Nostalgia, which sang '30s, '40s and '50s songs, and allowed them to dress in period clothing. Music was what gave Gayle great joy, and she often said it "made her heart sing." Throughout her entire course of surgery, treatments and chemotherapy, Gayle never let the cancer get her down. She handled the loss of hair, health and the ability to sing with grace and laughter. Gayle was extremely thankful for the thoughtful and caring people who took care of her through the years. She was also a very talented decorator and crafter. Gayle loved to read and tend her gardens until her health would no longer allow.
The one thing that gave her the greatest joy was her grandchildren, Jonathan Earl, 4, Steven Earl, 3, Jaydn Jeffery, 2, and Sierra Noel, 2. Gayle was also anticipating a grandson due in March. She loved to spend time with and spoil them. Gayle said that the only thing she prayed for herself through the whole course of her cancer was that she would live long enough so that her grandchildren "would have a few good memories of her." And they do.
Although Gayle did not think of herself as having many good qualities, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was an inspiration to many who knew her. Gayle will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her husband, Earl; her daughter, Rebecca Froemke, and husband, Duffy, Lisbon; her son, Charles, and wife Angie (Klein), Hazen; four grandchildren (with one more soon to arrive); her parents, Ken and Ethel Redka, Hazen; two sisters, LouAnn Sandau, Hazen, and Mary Krause, Lebanon, Ore.; three nieces; and four nephews.
