Glenda was a teacher at Jones Cove Elementary School in the mountains of East Tennessee. She was the kind of person everyone loved. She was also an experienced hiker. She became the first person killed by a black bear in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She was hiking and waiting for her former husband, Ralph Hill, who was fishing nearby, when she was attacked about two miles from the trailhead on the Little River Trail at, or near, the intersection of the Goshen Prong Trail in the Elkmont section of the park. It was an area she was very familiar with.
