Born Samuel Grosvenor Wood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he began his career as a director on the staff of Cecil B. De Mille as an assistant in 1915. He made his debut as a solo director for the film "City Sparrow" (1920) and went on to a long association with MGM in 1927. His many credits included "A Night at the Opera" (1935), "A Day at the Races" (1937), "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" (1939), as a co-director for "The Wizard of Oz" (1939), "Kitty Foyle" (1940) and "Pride of the Yankees" (1942).
