J L Henderson is my great-grandfather, the Rev. Jesse Louis Henderson born 22 Feb 1844 in Cherokee County, AL and died 30 Jan 1940 at the Baptist Hospital in Memphis, TN.

His wife Mollie, is M L Henderson and her full name is Mary Adeline "Mollie" Longest Henderson, born 18 May 1846 and died 30 Oct 1876 in Buena Vista, MS.

The following facts are summarized from notes made by Jesse Louis Henderson and his family before his death:

He was born February 22, 1844 in Cherokee, AL north of Gadsden on Terrapin Creek, Terrapin Creek Valley, on the east side of the Coosa River. In 1847 he moved to Greene Co when about three years old. They moved to the Chiwapa, near Pontotoc, MS in 1858 arriving on December the 25th, 1858.

He enlisted [in the Confederate Army] on October 13, 1861 and served under Captain Lafayette Hodges at Tallibinela, MS. J L Henderson's name is on the memorial in the square at Pontotoc commemorating the soldiers who served in the Confederate Army. After the war he became a teacher and a Baptist Minister in north central MS.

The Rev. Henderson taught school for eight or ten years. His first teaching was at Pleasant Grove, then at Troy, Seal's Academy, Soul's Chapel in Chickasaw County and at Toxish. These were partly public schools and partly subscription schools paid for by parents. He received $35 to $50 per month for four months from public funds and he was paid about $2 per month per child for the subscription period.

Chiwapa became the site of a country store about 1876 and a Post Office was established there in August 20, 1883. The Chiwapa Post Office had several postmasters, one being the Rev. Henderson's younger brother, Joseph C. Henderson, The Rev. Henderson served as postmaster from September 23, 1901, until the post office was discontinued September 29, 1906.

His son, my grandfather, the Rev. Judson Sanford Henderson was also a Baptist Minister in Texas. I have quite a bit of additional notes and some photos that I will try to upload some day.

Sincerely, James Sanford Henderson, Great grandson of J L Henderson
