Samuel was born in Orange County, North Carolina. On November 29, 1838 he married Martha Elizabeth Lansden in Marrowbone, (Bethany), Moultrie County, Illinois.To this union twelve (12) children were born:

George E. Dunscomb was called to Bethany Thursday to attend the funeral of his grandfather, Samuel Mitchell. Mr. Michell was 90 years old last April and was a native of-Tennessee. He has 1ived in Moultrie county since 1831. Some time ago he went to Missouri for the benefit of his hea1th, but age told on him and he died there. He was a devout and earnest Christian and was a member of the C. P. church. Mr. Mitchell was a grand old man whom it was a pleasure to know. He was one of those who changed the wilderness into a garden and who brought up a large family “in the nurture and admonition of the Lord"
