Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He served in the United States Navy during World War I. He served as United States Secretary of the Navy from 1944 to 1947, and was United States Secretary of Defense from 1947 to 1949. He died from a fall out of a window on the 16th floor at Bethesda Naval Hospital that was ruled a suicide.
