Death of Editor Rolfe
An Honored Citizen of Great Falls Unexpectedly Passes Away

Great Falls, March 28--H.P. Rolfe, editor of the Leader and one of the pioneers of Great Falls, died at his residence in this city at a quarter to 7 this morning after an illness of about one month. Only a few of his intimate friends knew that he was dangerously ill and the announcement of his death was a great shock to the community. He was first taken down with an attack of bilious fever and on the 14th of this month he was well enough to come down town. It is feared that he ventured out too soon, as it was a disagreeable day, and a day or so afterwards he suffered a relapse. His condition was at no time considered dangerous until last Sunday, when he developed symptoms of typhoid fever. His mind became clouded and from then until the end his physical condition grew weaker. His wife and children, with the exception of his oldest daughter, his physician and several friends were at the bedside when the dread summons came. The eldest daughter, Miss Pauline, is attending the Oberlin College of Ohio. She has been notified by wire of her father's death. Funeral arrangements were perfected this afternoon. Owing to the prominence of the deceased it promises to be one of the largest funerals ever held in Great Falls.

Herbert Percy Rolfe was born in Vermont, Aug. 30, 1849, was educated in the public schools and at 21 entered Bartmouth college. Graduating with honors, he came west to Columbus, Ohio, where for a time he taught school. There he was married to Martha Edgerton, daughter of ex-governor Edgerton of Montana. He came to Helena in 1876 and for three years was superintendent of public schools. Meanwhile he put in his spare time reading law in the office of Colonel Sanders. In 1879 he moved to Fort Benton and the following year he was admitted to the bar. In company with Paris Gibson, he visited the present site of Great Falls in 1882, and the next year, being a civil engineer, laid out the townsite. He has resided here continuously since 1885, part of the time being attorney for the townsite company. He started the Leader in 1889, and has since conducted the same. A wife and eight children survive him.
