KILLED IN ACTION
Corp. Robert John Ryan was killed in action in Italy November 25, according to word received Monday from the war department by the mother, Mrs. Bessie Ryan who lives south on highway 31; Kokomo, route 6. He had been overseas 19 months.
Corp. Ryan was born in Greentown. He receive his last four years of grade school education at Darrough Chapel. Before enlisting in the army November 2, 1942, he had worked at the McLellan Stores, Wake-Up, filling station, tire retreading shop on South Union street, Firestone, and was employed at the Walker Auto Sales on North Washington street when he entered the service.
After training in Virginia eight weeks with the coast guard, Corp. Ryan had 21 hours at home and then was transferred to Massachusetts. On May 8, 1943, he left the states, landing in Africa, and from there went to Italy, then to Corsica Island and back to Italy, then to Corsica Island and back to Italy. In the last letter received November 15, he said he was fine and told his mother not to worry.
Surviving besides the mother already mentioned and the father, Bernard Leo Ryan, are one brother, John Thomas Ryan; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ryan, 412 North Jay street, Kokomo; grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Wise of Tampa, Fla.; grandfather, Charles F.
